Hill Aura started because booking a hill stay was a gamble. Beautiful photographs, a four-hour drive up a ghat road, and a room that looked nothing like the listing. We got tired of it, so we started driving up first.
We are a small team based in Kodaikanal, and we list the stays we can reach, revisit and vouch for. That constraint is deliberate. An aggregator’s job is to have everything; ours is to have the right thing, and to have been there.
A property gets on this site after a night in it, a morning shooting it and a long conversation with whoever runs it. Roughly one in four we visit makes it. The ones that don't usually fail on the same thing — the photographs were doing work the property could not.
Every property here has had one of us asleep in it. We shoot it on the same trip, in whatever light the day gives us. It is slow, it does not scale, and it is the only reason this list is worth reading.
The number on a stay's page is the number we quote from — extra beds and children included, nothing revealed at a last step. This site takes no money at all: you send us dates, we check the stay, and we call you back with the final price and how to pay.
The same handful of us answer WhatsApp, keep the calendars and drive the ghat roads. Every enquiry is checked by one of us against the stay itself, and if a stay goes sideways at 11pm you are messaging someone who runs the property, not a desk that will pass it on.
